1/11 Jul 1676 - 15/25 Aug 1688 Province of East New Jersey
14/24 Mar 1683 James Drummond Earl of Perth and other proprietors are confirmed in possession of the territory of East New Jersey, as defined in the Quintipartite Deed of 1/11 Jul 1676, in accordance with an indenture of grant and release executed by James Duke of York on 14/24 Mar 1683 (New Jersey Grants, Concessions and Original Constitutions, pp. 141-150)
15/25 Aug 1688 the Province of East New Jersey is placed under the administration of a Governor and Council of the Territory and Dominion of New England in accordance with letters patent (commission) issued by command of the King of England on 7/17 Apr 1688, which was read and published in East New Jersey on 15/25 Aug 1688 (New York Colonial Documents, 3:537-542, 3:554-555)
  1. The deed of partition of New Jersey expressly divided the territory into "East New Jersey" and "West New Jersey," but the trustees of Edward Byllynge, proprietor of the western division, were not initially granted the right of government. Authority over the area remained under the jurisdiction of the governor of the Duke of York's American territories Edmund Andros. The Duke transferred the government only on 6/16 Aug 1680, a date that may be conditionally accepted as the establishment of the Province of West New Jersey.
