- McKinly was captured by the British army during the night of 12/13 Sep 1777. The functions of the President devolved on the Speaker of the Legislative Council George Read who was absent from Delaware. Thomas McKean in his capacity as Speaker of the House of Assembly assumed executive auhority on 22 Sep 1777, pending the arrival of Read on 15 Oct 1777.

- Acting on the instructions from President Dickinson, the Speaker of the Legislative Council John Cook assumed the functions of the President on or after 4 Nov 1782. The resignation of Dickinson was accepted by the House of Assembly on 31 Jan 1783.
