- The Constitution of 1776 provided for the election of a legislative branch designated as "The COUNCIL" (Art. 4), while also referring to it as the "Legislative Council" in other provisions.
- During the recess of the General Assembly between 10 Nov 1776 and 5 Jan 1777, executive authority was exercised by the Council of Safety.
