History:

According to the Constitution of 1911, the functions of Presidente da República in case of vacancy in the office were collectively exercised by os ministros (the ministers); after the resignation of Bernardino Machado (31 May 1926), the Government collectively assumed the functions of Head of State; collective presidency ceased to function when Gomes da Costa was entrusted (29 Jun 1926) with the exercise of the duties of President of the Republic.
