The adoption of the style and titles was authorized by the Royal Style and Titles Act, 1961, passed by the Legislature of the Federation of Nigeria (assented to on 19 May 1961, effective on publication in Official Gazette, No. 39, 1 Jun 1961, Supplement Part A, pp. A19-A20). The change was effected by a proclamation issued by the Acting Governor General on 28 Aug 1961 (effective on publication in Official Gazette, No. 63, 31 Aug 1961, p. 1189; retroactively effective from 1 Jun 1961). The proclamation provided for the use of the following style: "Elizabeth, the Second, Queen of Nigeria and of Her Other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth". An introductory part of the style ("By the Grace of God") was nevertheless added in official use. |
