Garibaldi assumed the dictatorship of Sicily in the name of the King of Sardinia Vittorio Emanuele II by a proclamation dated 14 May 1860, Salemi, Sicily. After the occupation of Naples (7 Sep 1860), he was proclaimed Dittatore del Regno in accordance with a decree of the Provisional Government of Naples of 7 Sep 1860 and was styled Dittatore delle Due Sicilie in legislation. This style was replaced with that of Dittatore dell'Italia Meridionale starting with 12 Sep 1860. The legislation emamating from the dictatorial government was invariably issued in the name of the King of Italy (Re d'Italia), preceding the assumption of this style by Vittorio Emanuele II on 17 Mar 1861. |
