History:

Elected by general voting (1 May 1848) in accordance with the resolutions of the Vorparlament (Pre-Parliament), which sat in Frankfurt-am-Main from 31 Mar 1848 to 3 Apr 1848; convened (18 May 1848) in the Paulskirche (St. Paul's Church), Frankfurt-am-Main, where most of the sessions took place, except for the period from 6 Nov 1848 to 11 Jan 1849 inclusively, when the Assembly temporarily moved to the Deutsch-Reformierte Kirche (German Reformist Church); passed the law on setting up a provisional central authority for Germany (Gesetz über die Einführung einer provisorischen Centralgewalt für Deutschland, 28 Jun 1848); elected provisional chief executive for Germany, Reichsverweser Erzherzog Johann (29 Jun 1848); debated the Constitution of the German Reich (passed by final voting on 28 Mar 1849); elected (28 Mar 1849) the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. as Kaiser der Deutschen (Emperor of the German; declined election on 3 Apr 1849); disintegrated after Austria and Prussia called back their deputies; radical rump approved the moving of the assembly to Stuttgart, Württemberg (30 May 1849); withdrew recognition of authority of the Reichsverweser and elected the Reich Regency (6 Jun 1849); was dispersed by the Württemberg troops (18 Jun 1849).
