Young was commissioned as Governor on 28 Sep 1850 and took the oath of office on 3 Feb 1851. During the military conflict with the federal government, he continued to exercise the functions of Governor despite the arrival and swearing-in of his successor, Alfred Cumming. Following the proclamation of the peace settlement agreed upon at a meeting of the federal commissioners and the leaders of the rebellion, including Young, on 12 Jun 1858, he relinquished his claim to the office.
Cumming was commissioned as Governor on 11 Jul 1857 and took the oath of office at St. Louis, Missouri, on 27 Jul 1857. Escorted by the United States Army, he crossed the boundary of Utah and, near Fort Bridger, issued a proclamation announcing his appointment on 21 Nov 1857. He took a second oath of office at Eckelsville, Utah, on 2 Feb 1858 and arrived at Salt Lake City on 12 Apr 1858. Cumming departed Utah on 18 May 1861 on a five-month leave of absence and was superseded by the appointment of Dawson on 2 Oct 1861.
Following the departure of Governor Cumming, the functions of the office devolved upon the Secretary of the Territory, Wootton. He was succeeded by Fuller, who had been commissioned as Secretary of the Territory on 15 Jul 1861 and took the oath of office at Salt Lake City on 12 Sep 1861.
Dawson was commissioned as Governor on 3 Oct 1861 and took the oath of office in Washington, D.C., on 21 Oct 1861. He arrived in Salt Lake City on 6 Dec 1861 and abruptly left Utah on 31 Dec 1861 at which point the functions of the Governor again devolved upon Secretary of the Territory Fuller. Dawson's successor was commissioned on 31 Mar 1862.
Harding was commissioned as Governor on 31 Mar 1862 and took the oath of office at Washington, D.C., on 2 Apr 1862. He arrived at Salt Lake City and entered upon the duties of office on 7 Jul 1862. His successor, James Doty, was commissioned on 2 Jun 1863, and Harding departed Utah on 11 Jun 1863. As Secretary of the Territory Fuller had departed on 13 May 1863, no territorial officer was legally authorized to exercise the functions of Governor until Doty's arrival.
Doty was commissioned as Governor on 2 Jun 1863. He arrived in Utah and took the oath of office on 19 Jun 1863.
