Educated at St. Helena's School, Wilmington, Delaware, and Archmere Academy, Claymont, Delaware; graduated from the University of Delaware, Newark (1965), and Syracuse (N.Y.) University College of Law (1968); admitted to the Delaware bar (1969) and commenced practice in Wilmington; served on the New Castle County Council (1970-1972); served as a Democrat member of the United States Senate (1973-2009); served as chair of the Committee on the Judiciary and Committee on Foreign Relations; was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008; elected Vice President of the United States (2009-2017) on the Democratic ticket headed by Barack Obama.
