Home Nations United States New York Presidents of the Convention: 1776-1777

New York: Presidents of the Convention: 1776-1777

President of the Convention of the Representatives of the State of New York
10 Jul 1776 - 28 Aug 1776 Nathaniel Woodhull [1]
28 Aug 1776 - 26 Sep 1776 Abraham Yates [2]
26 Sep 1776 - c. 19 Dec 1776 Peter R. Livingston
c. 19 Dec 1776 - 13 May 1777 Abraham Ten Broeck [3]
  1. Woodhull's term is presumed to have ended when he was taken prisoner by the British army on 28 Aug 1776.
  2. Yates served as president pro tempore in the absence of the incumbent (since 10 Aug 1776) and continued in office after Woodhull was taken into captivity.
  3. The loss of original minutes of the Convention (and Committee of Safety) of the State of New York for the period between 14 Dec 1776 and 31 Dec 1776 inclusively makes it impossible to verify the exact date of the election of Abraham Ten Broeck as President of the Convention. Some authentic documents suggest that he was elected on or before 19 Dec 1776 (most probably between 16 Dec 1776 and 19 Dec 1776).
