[3] | An order issued by command of the King of England on 30 Jul/9 Aug 1689 to Lieutenant Governor Nicholson ("and in his absence to such as for the time being take care for Preserving the Peace & administring the Lawes in our said Province of New York in America") instructed him to assume the government of the Province of New York. The order was delivered to New York and seized by Leisler on 9/19 Dec 1689. Acting purportedly on the instructions of the King, Leisler assumed the office of Lieutenant Governor most probably on 10/20 Dec 1689 as stated in his declaration of 10/20 Mar 1691. |
