6/16 Nov 1674 - 1/11 Jul 1676 Province of New Cæsarea or New Jersey
1/11 Jul 1676 the Province of New Jersey is divided into East New Jersey and West New Jersey in accordance with a quintite or quintipartite (five-party) indenture signed by Sir George Carteret and three trustees of Edward Byllynge's interest on 1/11 Jul 1676 (New Jersey Archives, Series 1, 1:205-219) [2]
  1. The indenture of grant was preceded by an indenture of lease for the same territory, executed for a term of one year commencing on 28 Jul/7 Aug 1674 and signed by the Duke of York on 28 Jul/7 Aug 1674 (New Jersey Archives, Series 1, 1:161-163).
  2. The partition of New Jersey was not implemented until the terms of the Quintipartite Deed were communicated to the Governor and resident Proprietors, most likely in the fall of 1676 or later. The Province of West New Jersey was effectively established upon the arrival of the commissioners appointed by the Proprietors and a group of settlers, who reached New Castle on 16/26 Aug 1677 and subsequently landed near Raccoon Creek on the Jersey side of the Delaware River (Smith's History of New Jersey, p. 93).
