- Serving as Governor of New Jersey before the submission to the authorities of New Netherland, Carteret sailed for England in July 1672 to seek assistance from the Lords Proprietors in suppressing a rebellion. Following the restoration of New Jersey to the Duke of York, he returned to the province. The formal partition was concluded in England on 1/11 Jul 1676, subsequently limiting his authority to East New Jersey.
