  1. Serving as Governor of New Jersey before the submission to the authorities of New Netherland, Carteret sailed for England in July 1672 to seek assistance from the Lords Proprietors in suppressing a rebellion. Following the restoration of New Jersey to the Duke of York, he returned to the province. The formal partition was concluded in England on 1/11 Jul 1676, subsequently limiting his authority to East New Jersey.
  2. Carteret was arrested and taken to New York on orders of Governor of the territories of the Duke of York in America Edmund Andros who claimed jurisdiction over New Jersey on the basis of his commission which included the territory from the "West side of Conecticut river to ye East side of Delaware bay." Carteret was brought to trial and acquitted; however, he was ordered not "to assume any authority or jurisdiction [...] civil or military." Acting on instructions from Elizabeth Carteret, Executrix and Guardian to the heir of Proprietor Sir George Carteret, Philip Carteret returned to New Jersey and reassumed the office of governor on 2/12 Mar 1681, declaring the usurpation by Andros illegal.
  3. The deputy governors were commissioned by the Proprietors and Robert Barclay who had been appointed Governor of the Province of East New Jersey in 1682 and re-appointed on 17/27 Jul 1683 as governor-for-life but never came to New Jersey.
  4. Although not explicitly recorded in the minutes, Lawrie was effectively dismissed at the meeting of the Board of Proprietors on 30 Sep/10 Oct 1686, when he was compelled to answer the "queries" contained in an instrument issued by the Proprietors. After the reading of a letter from Governor Barclay dated 4 Jun 1686, the contents of which were not recorded, the meeting resumed with Campbell listed as "governor." Campbell's commission was formally read at a meeting of the Council on 5/15 Oct 1686, at which he was recognized in that capacity by the members of the Council. All powers and commission to Lawrie were revoked by an instrument signed by the Proprietors in London on 5/15 May 1687.
  5. Commonly known as Lord Neil Campbell.
  6. Hamilton was first commissioned as deputy governor by Campbell prior to the latter's departure from New Jersey. The commission was read at the meeting of the Board of Proprietors on 10/20 Mar 1687 and then at the Council's meeting on 12/22 Mar 1687. He was subsequently appointed deputy governor by Governor Barclay and the Proprietors by a commission dated 18 Aug 1687, which was read and published in East New Jersey on 19/29 Jun 1688.
