Connecticut: Polity Style: 1639-1687

14/24 Jan 1639 the towns of Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfield, established by the settlers along the Connecticut River, formed a confederation based on a set of orders adopted by an assembly of residents on 14/24 Jan 1639 (Connecticut Colonial Records, 1:20-25) [1]
23 Apr/3 May 1662 the settlers of the colony of Connecticut, John Winthrop (the Younger) and others, are incorporated as a "Body Corporate and Pollitique" by the name of the Governor and Company of the English Colony of Connecticut in New England in America, and granted part of the royal dominions in New England, in accordance with letters patent (charter) issued by command of the King of England on 23 Apr/3 May 1662 (Connecticut Colonial Records, 2:1-11)
9/19 Oct 1662 the charter is read and published at the session of the General Assembly (or Court of Election) held on 9/19 Oct 1662 in Hartford (Connecticut Colonial Records, 1:384-385)
9/19 Oct 1662 - 1/11 Nov 1687 Colony of Connecticut [2]
1/11 Nov 1687 the Colony of Connecticut is annexed to the Territory and Dominion of New England upon the proclamation of the Royal Commission to the Governor-in-Chief of New England and dissolution of colonial government at a public ceremony held on 1/11 Nov 1687 in Hartford (Bulkeley, pp. 137-140; Connecticut Colonial Records, 3:389-390) [3]
  1. The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, as the document is historically known, did not specify the name of the confederation, referring instead to the polity as a "Publike State or Com̃onwelth." A frequently used designation was the Jurisdiction (of Connecticut, of the Connecticut River).
  2. In more formal use: (His Majesty's) English Colony of Connecticut, in New England, in America.
  3. Connecticut was not listed among the colonies and lands to constitute the Territory and Dominion of New England in the first royal commission to the Governor-in-Chief of New England (Sir Edmund Andros), dated 3/13 Jun 1686 (see Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, 2:44-56). The additional powers and instructions (13/23 Sep 1686) authorized Andros to demand the surrender of the Charter of Connecticut and to take the colony under the government of New England. The second commission to Andros (dated 7/17 Apr 1688, published on 19/29 Jul 1688 in Boston) attached Connecticut to the administration of the Dominion.
