- Stockton took over as commander-in-chief of the forces of the United States in California by a proclamation issued on 23 Jul 1846 at Monterey and assumed the functions of governor after the capture of Los Angeles on 17 Aug 1846.
- Frémont was commissioned as governor by Stockton on 16 Jan 1846. Following the departure of Stockton, Frémont's commission was read and published at Ciudad de los Angeles on 19 Jan 1846.
- Commanding Military Officer Kearny assumed the functions of the Governor by a proclamation issued at Monterey on 1 Mar 1847. Frémont received a copy of Kearny's proclamation at Ciudad de los Angeles on 11 Mar 1847, but continued to exercise the duties of office to 22 Mar 1847 when he departed for Monterey to meet Kearny, acknowledging his submission to the latter's authority.
