- Stockton took over as commander-in-chief of the forces of the United States in California by a proclamation issued on 23 Jul 1846 at Monterey and assumed the functions of governor after the capture of Los Angeles on 17 Aug 1846.
- Kearny assumed the functions of governor by a proclamation issued at Monterey on 1 Mar 1847. Frémont received a copy of the proclamation at Los Angeles on 11 Mar 1847, but continued to exercise the duties of office to 22 Mar 1847 when he departed for Monterey to meet Kearny, acknowledging his submission to the latter's authority.
