The death of Gnassingbé Eyadéma which had occurred on 5 Feb 2005 was certified by the Constitutional Court (Cour constitutionnelle) on 6 Feb 2005, opening a vacancy effective 5 Feb 2005.
The constitutional successor of Gnassingbé Eyadéma, President of the National Assembly (Président de l'Assemblée Nationale) Fambaré Natchaba Ouattara, was prevented from taking office as President of the Republic. A declaration made by the Armed Forces on 5 Feb 2005 conferred the executive authority on Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé who was formally elected President of the National Assembly on 6 Feb 2005, and as such succeeded to the office ofPresident of the Republic, taking the oath of office on 7 Feb 2005.
