  1. The style Sulṭān was initially used only in international relations. Other honorific titles: Ḥāmī (حامي), Sayyid (سيد), the latter is normally prepended to personal name.
  2. Barghash died around the midnight of 26/27 Mar 1888 and Khalīfah was installed on 27 Mar 1888.
  3. Following the death of Ḥāmad, Khālid seized the palace and proclaimed himself ruler, but was besieged by the British armed forces and was compelled to take refuge in a foreign consulate.
