The Royal Commission appointing Shepstone to be Administrator of the Transvaal Territory remained valid to 5 Jun 1880. |

Lanyon administered the government of the Transvaal Territory in the absence of Shepstone and, from 28 May 1879, pending the taking office by a Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Transvaal Territory. During the absences of Governor Wolseley from Pretoria, he intermittently administered the government until 5 Jun 1880 when his substantial appointment as the Adminstrator became effective. |

The appointment of Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Transvaal Territory by the Royal Commission of 28 May 1878 provided for validity of the commissions of the administrators of the Transvaal (Shepstone and Lanyon) when a) the appointee was present in Transvaal (Lanyon), and b) was required to assume executive functions temporarily in the absence of the Governor. |

Wolseley departed from South Africa on 25 May 1880. The Royal Commission appointing Wolseley to be Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over the Transvaal Territory remained valid to 5 Jun 1880. |

Lanyon departed from South Africa in May 1881. The Royal Commission appointing Lanyon to be Administrator of the Government continued to be valid until 8 Aug 1881 when the Transvaal Territory (Province) ceased to be part of the dominions of the British Crown. |
