| Graduated from the law faculty (1987) of the Leningrad Ždanov State University; awarded the degree of kandidat nauk in law (1990); taught at the Leningrad/St. Petersburg State University (1990–1999); served as advisor to the Chairman of the Leningrad city council and as expert on external relations of Leningrad/St. Petersburg Mayor's Office (1990–1995); deputy chief of the Government Staff of the Russian Federation (9 Nov 1999 - 31 Dec 1999); after the assumption of the office of Acting President of the Russian Federation by Vladimir Putin, he was appointed deputy chief of the Administration of the President of Russian Federation (31 Dec 1999 – 3 Jun 2000), and then first deputy chief of the Administration of the President (3 Jun 2000 - 30 Oct 2003); served as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Gazprom oil and gas concern (2000-2001 and from 2002), in 2001 as deputy chairman; was promoted to the post of Chief of the Administration of the President of Russian Federation (30 Oct 2003 - 14 Nov 2005); member of the Security Council of the Russian Federation (from 12 Nov 2003); first deputy chairman of the Government of Russian Federation (14 Nov 2005 - 7 May 2008); elected President of the Russian Federation (2 Mar 2008) and took office 7 May 2008. |
