Biography:
Studied law at the Leningrad Ždanov State University (1970-1975); was employed by the First Chief Directorate (Human Resources) of the Leningrad branch of the USSR Committee for State Security (1975-1984); graduated from the Red Banner Andropov Institute of the USSR Committee for State Security (1985); was send to East Germany to serve as director of a German-Soviet Friendship House (Haus der deutsch-sowjetischen Freundschaft) in 1985–1990; resigned from the USSR Committee for State Security (1991); was named chairman of the committee for external relations of the Office of Mayor of St. Petersburg (1991); promoted to lieutenant colonel in the KGB reserve (1992); held the office of the first deputy chairman of the St. Petersburg Government (1994-1996); was transferred to Moscow to serve as deputy chief of the Presidential Property Management Department (1996); appointed deputy chief (26 Mar 1997) and then first deputy chief (25 May 1998) of the Presidential Staff; headed the Federal Security Service in the office of director (25 Jul 1998 - 9 Aug 1999) and served as secretary of the Security Council (from 29 Mar 1999); prior to the dismissal of the government of Sergej Stepašin, he was appointed First Deputy Chairman of the Government (9 Aug 1999); continued as Acting Chairman of the Government (9 Aug 1999 - 16 Aug 1999); served as Chairman of the Government (16 Aug 1999 - 7 May 2000); after the resignation of Boris El'cin as President of the Russian Fed ration, he assumed the office of Acting President (31 Dec 1999 - 7 May 2000); was elected President of the Russian Federation at general elections of 26 Mar 2000; re-elected 14 Mar 2004.
