The Constitution of 1979 (effective 1980-1993) and the Constitution of 1993 (effective from 1993) refer to the holder of the office exclusively as Presidente de la República. This style is used for promulgation as part of the constitutionally prescribed formula, while Presidente Constitucional de la República is normally attached to the signature of the incumbent. |

Fujimori was discharged from the office of President of the Republic by a resolution of the Congreso (passed on 21 Nov 2000). His constitutional successor, Second Vice President of the Republic Ricardo Márquez Flores, refused to take office of the President of the Republic and submitted his resignation as Second Vice President. It was accepted by a resolution of the Congreso (passed 22 Nov 2000) and the President of the Congreso (Paniagua) took oath of office as President of the Republic on the same day. |

Vizcarra was discharged from the office of President of the Republic by a resolution of the Congreso (passed on 9 Nov 2020). His constitutional successor, President of the Congreso Merino de Lama, took oath of office as President of the Republic on 10 Nov 2020. |

The resignation of Merino from the office of President of the Republic was accepted by a resolution of the Congreso (passed on 15 Nov 2020) which declared the office vacant and called for the election of President of the Congreso who, as constitutional successor, would assume the presidency of the Republic. Sagasti was elected President of the Congreso on 16 Nov 2020 and took oath of office as President of the Republic on 17 Nov 2020. |
