After the death of Smilevski (8 Sep 1979), the office remained vacant until the election of his successor. During the vacancy, the Presidency designated (28 Sep 1979) one of its members, Ljupčo Arsov, to exercise the functions of the President. Arsov was elected the President of the Presidency on 31 Oct 1979.
