- The Governor of New Ulster served concurrently as Governor-in-Chief of New Zealand. During his frequent absences from the seat of government, Auckland, the functions of governor were exercised by Lieutenant Governor George Dean Pitt (commissioned on 3 Jan 1848; sworn in on 14 Feb 1848; died on 8 Jan 1851). During a visit by Governor-in-Chief Grey to Auckland in April 1851, Robert Henry Wynyard was commissioned Lieutenant Governor on 14 Apr 1851. Grey departed for Wellington on 24 Apr 1851, and Wynyard took the oath of office on 26 Apr 1851. Grey never again assumed the government of New Ulster in person, leaving Wynyard in charge.
