- Originally in official use (proclamations of 1840): Lieutenant Governor of the British Settlements in progress in New Zealand.
- Hobson was commissioned as "Lieutenant-governor in and over any territory which is or may be acquired in sovereignty by Her Majesty, Her heirs or successors, within that group of islands in the Pacific Ocean commonly called New Zealand." He arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, and was sworn in on 14 Jan 1840, before departing for New Zealand, where his commission was read and published at Russell (Kororāreka) on 30 Jan 1840.
