- Danilo was designated prince by a popular assembly held in Cetinje probably on 1/12 Mar 1852 during his absence from Montenegro. A petition signed by the Montenegrin nobility, clergy and officials on 7/19 Mar 1852 requested the approval of their action by the Emperor of Russia, a protecting power of Montenegro. Danilo received the consent of the Emperor Nikolaj I in St. Petersburg and returned to Cetinje where he was solemnly proclaimed and took the oath of office on 8/20 Sep 1852 (Pavićević, p. 103).
