- The first five members of the Regency were elected by the Provisional Governing Junta (Junta Provisional Gubernativa) on 28 Sep 1821 and took their oaths of office the following day, 29 Sep 1821. The Regency was to serve until the throne of Mexico was accepted by King of the Spains Fernando VII, another member of the House of Borbón named in the Treaty of Córdoba, or a candidate elected by the Cortes of the Empire. Ultimately, neither Fernando VII nor any other Borbón accepted the offer.
