[1] In capacity of the (former) President of the Constituent Assembly (Satversmes Sapulces prezidents), Čakste was authorised to exercise the functions of head of state until the election of a State President (Valsts prezidents) in accordance with Art. 8 of an act passed 20 Jun 1922 by the Constituent Assembly (Valdības Vēstnesis, No. 141, 30 Jun 1922, p. 2). The application of Constitutional provisions with regard to the authority of the Chairman of the Saeimas (Saeimas priekšsēdētājs) (Frīdrihs Vesmanis, in office 7 Nov 1922 - 13 Mar 1925) to act as provisional head of state is effectively suspended by the cited legislation.
[2] Ulmanis was appointed to exercise the functions of the State President (Valsts prezidents) by an act signed by the State President 19 Mar 1936 (effective 11 Apr 1936) (Valdības Vēstnesis, No. 65, 19 Mar 1936, p. 1); Ulmanis assumed the style Valsts prezidents when he took office.
