16 Jun 1944 the union with Denmark is dissolved in accordance with the results of the referendum held between 20 and 23 May 1944 and a resolution passed by the Alþingi (joint meeting of the Efri deild and Neðri deild on 16 Jun 1944) (Iceland Parliamentary Gazette, 1944-1945, Part D, col. 284-285)
17 Jun 1944 the Constitution of the Republic of Iceland (Stjórnarskrá lýðveldisins Íslands) is adopted by the Alþingi (Efri deild on 6 Mar 1944, Neðri deild on 8 Mar 1944), approved at the referendum held between 20 and 23 May 1944, and came into operation on 17 Jun 1944 after the proclamation made by the President of the Alþingi at the session at Þingvellir in accordance with a resolution passed by the Alþingi (joint meeting of the Efri deild and Neðri deild on 16 Jun 1944) (Iceland Parliamentary Gazette, 1944-1945, Part B, col. 120-139, 1971-1974; Part D, col. 285-286; Iceland Official Gazette - Part A, 1944, pp. 42-51)
