The son of a teacher; was educated as lawyer in Strasbourg and Göttingen (1806-1816); held positions in the court of appeals at Zweibrücken (1816-1832); acquired a vineyard near Metz, France (from 1824); elected to the Bavarian Kammer der Abgeordneten (Chamber of Deputies, 1831); founder of the liberal Association of the Press and Fatherland (Preß- und Vaterlandsverein), banned by the Bavarian government (1832); prosecuted by the Bavarian authorities; immigrated to France (1832); lived in Bad Niederbronn, Strasbourg, Metz and Paris; important member of the German immigrant associations in Paris (mid-1830s); chairman of the Union of the Germans (Bund der Deutschen); elected as a representative of Lauterecken, Palatinate of the Rhine (as part of Bavaria), to the Nationalversammlung (National Assembly) and served as deputy (18 May 1848 - 18 Jun 1849); belonged to the extreme left faction Donnersberg; participated in the rebellion in Rhineland-Palatinate (1849); elected to the Bavarian Kammer der Abgeordneten (Chamber of Deputies, 1849); elected a member of the German Reich Regency (6 Jun 1849); fled to France via Switzerland; sentenced to death in-absentia for revolutionary activities (1851); lived in France (from 1849).
