1 Feb 1982 Agreement Between the Republic of The Gambia and the Republic of Senegal Concerning the Establishment of the Senegambian Confederation (signed at Dakar, Senegal, 17 Dec 1981) comes into force on the first day of the month following that in which instruments of ratification are exchanged (1 Feb 1982) as prescribed by Art. 19 of the Agreement [2]

  4. The Gambia was declared an islamic republic by a statement of the President of the Republic made on 10 Dec 2015 during a public meeting in Brufut. The change of the name to the Islamic Republic of The Gambia was never formalized but this polity style was in limited official use during the tenure of President Jammeh (to 21 Jan 2017).
