Biography:
Studied theology at the seminary of Lausanne and received a certificate of consecration on 18 Jun 1784; held the position of secretary at the provincial synod of Haut-Languedoc (1 May 1788); was a Protestant minister at Castres; elected (30 Aug 1791) as a representative of the département of Tarn to the Assemblée nationale (National Assembly) (1791-1792); appointed a member of the Commission extraordinaire des Douze (Extraordinary Commission of Twelve) (12 Aug 1792 - 21 Sep 1792); elected (3 Sep 1792) to the Convention nationale (National Convention) (1792-1793) as a deputy for Tarn; was associated with the Girondins; voted for the death sentence in the trial of King Louis XVI; was sent on a mission to Nice and called for unification of this city with France; member of the Comité de sûreté générale (Committee of General Security) (24 Jan 1793 - Apr 1793); elected President of the National Convention (18 Apr 1793 - 2 May 1793); accused Georges Danton of complicity in the treason of Dumouriez (1 Apr 1793); proscribed (2 Jun 1793) and condemned to death by the revolutionary tribunal (30 Oct 1793); guillotined (31 Oct 1793).
