19 Sep 1991 the name of the state is changed in accordance with a law passed by Supreme Council of the Belarusian SSR on 19 Sep 1991 (Soviet Belarus, No. 188, 25 Sep 1991, p. 1)

Belarus was a founding member of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and a signatory to the Treaty on the Creation of the USSR signed in the name of the Belarusian Socialist Soviet Republic. The new style was gradually adopted and largely displaced the Socialist Soviet Republic of Belarus in official use since 1924.
  2. Full titles (Russian): Deklaracija ob obrazovanii Sojuza Sovetskih Socialističeskih Respublik (Декларация об образовании Союза Советских Социалистических Республик); Dogovor ob obrazovanii Sojuza Sovetskih Socialističeskih Respublik (Договор об образовании Союза Советских Социалистических Республик).
  3. Full title (Belarusian, original spelling): Kanstytucyja (Asnoŭny zakon) Belaruskaj Sacyjalistyčnaj Saveckaj Rèspubliki (Канстытуцыя (Асноўны закон) Беларускай Сацыялістычнай Савецкай Рэспублікі).
  4. The Constitution of the Belarusian SSR of 1927 recognized the equality of four languages: Belarusian, Russian, "Jewish" (Yiddish) and Polish. The Constitution adopted on 19 Feb 1937 omitted any reference to the status of languages.
