Member of the Landtag of Lower Austria (from 1902), Reichsrat (1901-1918), vice-president of the House of Representatives [Abgeordnetenhaus] (1918); member and president of the Provisional National Assembly (21 Oct 1918 - 16 Feb 1919); member of the State Council for German Austria (30 Oct 1918 - 7 Mar 1919); member (4 Mar 1919 - 10 Nov 1920) and president (5 Mar 1919 - 10 Nov 1920) of the Constituent National Assembly; member (10 Nov 1920 - 17 Feb 1934; 19 Dec 1945 - 3 Feb 1950) and Second President of the Nationalrat (15 Dec 1920 - 20 Nov 1923); chairman of the Social Democratic Party [Sozialdemokratische Partei, SdP] (1920-1934); Mayor and Landeshauptmann of Vienna (13 Nov 1923 - 12 Feb 1934); incarcerated (1934), sent to concentration camp (1944-1945); honorary chairman of the Socialist Party [Sozialistische Partei Österreichs, SPÖ] (from 1945).
