Andorra: Co-Rulers (Urgell): 1278-1812 Originally, the bishops of Urgell exercised their authority as co-seigneurs of Andorra under their ecclesiastical title (Miseratione divina episcopus Urgellensis; Dei gratia Urgellensis episcopus, etc.). Since the earliest known attempt to assert their claim for princely title (1663), the bishops have been claiming sovereign authority over Andorra, defying the authority of the kings of France as co-seigneurs.
The beginning of each bishop's term corresponds to the date of appointment as Bishop of Urgell by the Holy See as found in Hierarchia Catholica and/or Acta Apostolicae Sedis; the closing date is defined either by the instrument of transfer of the incumbent to another see, or by his death or his resignation, confirmed by the same sources. |
