[2] Andros left New York on 7/17 Jan 1681 and sailed for England on 11/21 Jan 1681. Commander-in-Chief Anthony Brockholes administered the government during his absence. Thomas Dongan succeeded Andros as Lieutenant and Governor when his commission was read and published in New York on 27 Aug/6 Sep 1683.

[4] The commission for Dongan issued by command of the Duke 30 Sep/10 Oct 1682 referred to the office as "Lt and Govr within ye lands islands and places" (as defined in the grant of 1674). The "Colony of New York and its Dependencies," however, was used in the instructions to Dongan (27 Jan/6 Feb 1683) and his commission as Vice Admiral (3/13 Oct 1682). After the accession of the Duke of York to the thrones of England and Scotland (6/16 Feb 1685), his former possessions became a crown colony and the "Province of New York" went into official use.
