- Baylor signed his resignation at Mesilla on 17 Mar 1862 and departed for Richmond, Virginia. The resignation was likely not accepted, as on 29 May 1862 he was assigned by the Confederate War Department, in his capacity as Governor of Arizona, to raise troops. He was absent from Arizona when it was occupied by the armed forces of the United States.
