A law on the government of the Basque Country (effective 27 Jul 1981) refers to the office as Lehendakari both in Spanish and Basque versions and the style is used in legislation (same for both languages).
[2] Designated by the Parlamento/Legebiltzarra of the Basque Country on 9 Apr 1980 and immediately took oath of office, using a traditional formula (not prescribed by law), before the appointment by royal decree which followed on 13 Apr 1980.
