The third son of German social democrat Hermann Molkenbuhr, Brutus also joined the Social Democratic Party (Socialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands, SPD). In 1918 he became a member of the soldiers' council organized in hospitals of Berlin-Friedrichshain. Elected to the Vollzugsrat der Arbeiter- und Soldatenräte Groß-Berlins (Executive Council of the Workers' and Soldiers' Councils) during the meeting in the Busch Circus on 10 Nov 1918, Molkenbuhr replaced Hans-Georg von Beerfelde as its chairman on 12 Nov 1918.
