6 Jul 1966 Malawi became a sovereign democratic republic in accordance with an act passed by the Parliament of Malawi on 20 May 1966 and assented to on 14 Jun 1966, effective on 6 Jul 1966 (Malawi Government Gazette, 17 Jun 1966, Supplement, pp. 1-60) [2]
