The terms of the Presidents of the Supreme Executive Council are presumed to commence with the swearing-in as required by Sect. 40 of the Constitution of 1776, and to end with the expiration of 3-year terms as members of the Council (councillor).

[1] Joseph Reed was elected a councillor for the county of Philadelphia in the General Election of 13 Oct 1778 to complete the 3-year term of Thomas Wharton, Jr. (died 23 May 1778), ending on the day of next General Election (12 Oct 1779); due to the expiration of his term as a councillor (12 Oct 1779), Reed ceased to hold the office of President of the Supreme Executive Council, but on the same day he was again returned as councillor for the county of Philadelphia and was re-elected as President 15 Oct 1779, serving two more years as councillor as the Constitution of 1776 (Sect. 19) did not allow to hold this office for more than "three successive years".
