The position of a chief military commander and leader of the Dutch settlers in Transvaal was originally claimed by Andries Hendrik Potgieter named "hoofd Commandant en bestierder" in a petition signed by the residents of Potchefstroom on 6 May 1845 and confirmed by another petition coming from Ohrihstad (1 Aug 1845). He was also confirmed as "hoofkommandant en Bestierder der Hollandsche Emigranten" by a public assembly held on 22 and 23 Sep 1846. Another claimant, Pretorius was elected "Commandant General" by a public assembly held in Winburg on 7 and 8 Feb 1848. The Volksraad decisively refused to confirm either nomination and stressed their position by a resolution of 24 Sep 1849. After a period of political struggle, Pretorius was finally appointed to the office of Commandant Generaal by the Volksraad (provisionally on 16 Oct 1850). |
